Democrats Launch Multi-Million Dollar Ad Campaign Targeting 23 House Republicans

Created: JANUARY 05, 2025

A group with close ties to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is launching a substantial ad campaign against 23 Republican representatives. The campaign, costing millions, centers around accusations that the GOP aims to dismantle healthcare provisions for senior citizens and children. Beginning Monday, the advertisements allege that Republicans are "jeopardizing healthcare access for 37 million children and forcing seniors from nursing homes simply to further enrich billionaires like Elon Musk."

House Majority PAC (HMP), a fundraising organization aligned with Democratic leadership, is spearheading this initiative. The targeted Republicans largely represent districts in California, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and other states that were pivotal in securing the GOP's narrow House majority. These representatives won tightly contested races in the 2024 election cycle.

Mike Smith, president of HMP's action arm, House Majority Forward, connects the ad campaign to last week's House Republican vote advancing former President Trump's budget reconciliation agenda. Smith stated, "Republicans broke their promise last week and set the stage to strip healthcare from millions. We'll ensure every American knows who is accountable."

The 23 targeted House Republicans include Representatives Nick Begich (AK), David Schweikert (AZ), Juan Ciscomani (AZ), Kevin Kiley (CA), David Valadao (CA), Young Kim (CA), Ken Calvert (CA), Gabe Evans (CO), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA), Zach Nunn (IA), Tom Barrett (MI), John James (MI), Don Bacon (NE), Tom Kean Jr. (NJ), Mike Lawler (NY), Ryan Mackenzie (PA), Rob Bresnahan (PA), Scott Perry (PA), Rob Wittman (VA), Jen Kiggans (VA), Bryan Steil (WI), Derrick Van Orden (WI), and Monica De La Cruz (TX).

This campaign constitutes part of the Democratic response to proposed cuts of $880 billion to programs overseen by the House Energy & Commerce Committee. Republicans are targeting at least $1.5 trillion in spending cuts to offset the costs of Trump's priorities, which are expected to include eliminating taxes on tipped and overtime wages and increased funding for border security. However, GOP lawmakers maintain that Medicaid and other federal aid programs are not explicitly targeted in their legislative framework. They insist their focus is on eliminating government waste, fraud, and abuse. Former President Trump himself stated he wouldn't touch Medicaid.

Despite these assurances, Democrats and some moderate Republicans remain skeptical that the necessary savings can be achieved without impacting these programs. Democrats also seem to be positioning Elon Musk as a key figure in their messaging leading up to the 2026 midterms, given his involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and their efforts to identify $1 trillion in cuts to the federal bureaucracy.

The NRCC, the House Republicans’ campaign arm, has accused Democrats of exploiting the Trump budget bill vote, resorting to fearmongering tactics to distract from their own failures.
