California, the state most vulnerable to wildfires in the US, is implementing a groundbreaking AI program to detect fires before they escalate. Partnering with the University of California San Diego’s ALERTCalifornia program, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) is investing $24 million in this innovative technology.

The AI system continuously monitors a network of over 1,000 high-definition cameras strategically placed across the state. These cameras offer 360-degree views, night vision capabilities, and impressive zoom functionality, capturing images from up to 60 miles during the day and 120 miles at night. The system is constantly expanding, with new cameras being added regularly.

The AI is trained to identify anomalies like heat, fire, or smoke, differentiating them from other environmental factors like smog or mist. Upon detection, the system alerts emergency centers, enabling rapid human assessment of the potential threat. This proactive approach aims to significantly reduce response times and prevent small fires from becoming major disasters.

This initiative follows the devastating 2018 Camp Fire, the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California's history. This tragedy underscored the urgent need for advanced fire detection and prevention methods.

The AI-powered camera network is currently being tested in several fire units throughout California. Cal Fire believes this technology will revolutionize firefighting strategies by providing real-time data, predicting fire behavior, and improving resource allocation.

In addition to the AI program, California is also utilizing drones to monitor fire spread and locate trapped individuals. Governor Gavin Newsom has emphasized the state's commitment to leveraging technology for wildfire management, highlighting its potential to enhance safety and improve response times.
