A tragic road rage incident in Brooklyn, New York, on June 8, 2023, resulted in the death of a respected cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Jaime Yun, 56, of Manhasset. The incident occurred amidst heavy smog from Canadian wildfires that blanketed the city.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), Yun was involved in a physical altercation with 31-year-old Dexter Alexander near Crown Heights. The altercation allegedly stemmed from a traffic dispute where Yun reportedly made contact with Alexander's side-view mirror. Alexander then allegedly struck Yun in the head, leaving him on the ground. Police arrived to find Yun in stable condition but his health deteriorated. He was transported to a local hospital and later succumbed to his injuries on June 16, 2023. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide due to a brain injury.

Dr. Yun's obituary describes him as a dedicated family man whose two children were "the light of his life." He met his wife, Tyan, in middle school. The obituary also highlights his journey from Venezuela and Colombia to New York City with his family in the 1970s. A brilliant student, Yun became valedictorian at Immaculate Conception Elementary School, graduated from Bronx Science high school, earned his bachelor's degree from Columbia University, and then graduated from New York University Medical School.

Alexander was arrested approximately two hours after the incident. Initially charged with assault, the charges are likely to be upgraded following Yun's death and the medical examiner's ruling. This tragic incident underscores the dangers of road rage and its devastating consequences.

The NYPD continues to investigate the incident.
