Bipartisan Support for Trump's Penny-Pinching Proposal

Created: JANUARY 05, 2025

Members of Congress from both parties have expressed agreement with President Trump's recent directive to halt the production of pennies. The former president cited the rising cost of minting the one-cent coin, which now exceeds two cents per penny.

Representative Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) went so far as to call the move potentially "the best thing" Trump has done, noting that pennies haven't been minted since 2023. His Democratic colleague, Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD), concurred, stating his support for eliminating the penny.

Representative Ami Bera (D-CA) also backed the decision, highlighting the financial burden of producing a coin that costs more to make than its face value. The U.S. Mint reported losses exceeding $85 million on penny production in 2024.

Republican lawmakers echoed these sentiments. Representative Carlos Giménez (R-FL) questioned the logic of spending two cents to make one, while Representative Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ) emphasized the "financial sense" of discontinuing the coin.

Representative George Latimer (D-NY) expressed a more cautious approach, stating that he is consulting with local businesses to gauge the potential impact on their operations, particularly concerning sales tax calculations.
