A Tribute to America's Unsung Heroes: The Farmers

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

The resilience and stewardship of farmers are truly remarkable. They dedicate their lives to feeding the nation, often facing immense hardships without adequate recognition. The current agricultural recession underscores the burdens they carry and the need for greater appreciation of their contributions.

As an actor, I'm accustomed to a certain level of recognition. While my work is fulfilling, it pales in comparison to the dedication and long hours farming families invest daily. They tirelessly provide for others, without the fanfare or comforts often associated with other professions.

Farming transcends a mere occupation; it's a vocation. The sacrifices farmers make, from enduring long hours and escalating costs to battling unpredictable weather and policy hurdles, often go unnoticed. The price of corn seed has doubled in recent years, coupled with declining crop prices, creating a system that seems to work against them. Yet, they persevere, driven by a deep commitment to feeding millions and sustaining communities.

My family's farming heritage has profoundly shaped my values. My great-grandfather, Gulbrand Nelson, emigrated from Norway to Wisconsin, eventually settling in South Dakota, where our family farm remains to this day. This upbringing instilled in me the importance of values, tradition, and faith – principles I cherish and strive to uphold.

I'm fortunate to have a career that allows me to pursue projects I'm passionate about. "Green and Gold," a film celebrating the spirit and struggles of farming families, is one such project. It embodies the values I hold dear: resilience, stewardship, and legacy. It's a tribute to the farmers who are the unsung heroes of our nation.

Growing up near farming communities provided me with firsthand experience of their perseverance. I witnessed the long days, the families working together through adversity, and the profound pride they took in their work. These experiences have shaped my values and the stories I choose to tell.

My involvement in "Green and Gold" is more than just a role; it's an opportunity to honor the legacy of farming families. The film sheds light on their resilience and quiet strength, reminding us of their indispensable contributions.

Farmers are the backbone of America. Their stewardship reflects faith, responsibility, and commitment to something larger than themselves. Yet, they often face economic and policy challenges alone. The current farming recession is not just an agricultural issue; it's a national concern. Rural communities are struggling, and the consequences will impact us all. We must actively support policies that benefit farmers, invest in rural infrastructure, and champion their contributions to our daily lives.

Beyond the economic hardships, farming takes an emotional toll. Conversations with farmers during the preparation for "Green and Gold" revealed a mixture of pride and concern. They worry about the future of farming and whether their children will want to inherit the associated struggles. These are not just abstract questions; they are the realities shaping rural America today.

We are deeply indebted to our farmers. They provide food, clothing, and sustain our economy. Their work is integral to our history, yet their voices are often marginalized in national discussions. By sharing their stories, both on and off screen, we can honor their contributions and address the challenges they face.

Let us express our gratitude for the tireless work of farmers. Support local farmers' markets, advocate for policies that empower them, and acknowledge their vital role in our lives.

Throughout my career, I've experienced accolades and recognition. Yet, I hope these words serve as a sincere expression of gratitude to the farming families across our nation. Thank you, farmers.
