Trump and Sheinbaum Reach Agreement on Border Security, Tariffs Paused

Created: JANUARY 16, 2025

Following a productive discussion between President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, an agreement has been struck to address border security concerns. Mexico will deploy 10,000 soldiers to its border with the United States to combat drug trafficking and stem the flow of illegal immigration. In return, the U.S. has agreed to postpone the implementation of tariffs on Mexican goods for a one-month period. This pause will allow both nations to engage in further negotiations on broader trade and security matters.

President Sheinbaum announced the agreement via social media, emphasizing the collaborative effort to enhance border security and address shared concerns. President Trump confirmed the agreement on Truth Social, describing the conversation with President Sheinbaum as "very friendly." He detailed the agreement, stating that the Mexican troops will be specifically tasked with stopping the flow of fentanyl and illegal migrants into the U.S.

The agreement comes just days after President Trump announced tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. While a similar agreement has not yet been reached with Canada, discussions are ongoing. President Trump indicated he spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and expects further conversations later. Trudeau, meanwhile, encouraged Canadians to prioritize purchasing domestically produced goods in response to the tariff threat.

The one-month pause on tariffs will allow high-level representatives from both the U.S. and Mexico, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, to engage in negotiations. President Trump expressed his intention to participate in these discussions alongside President Sheinbaum with the aim of reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.
