Red, White, and Blueland? Congressman Proposes Greenland Name Change Amidst Trump's Acquisition Ambitions

Created: JANUARY 14, 2025

Georgia Representative Buddy Carter has introduced a bill to rename Greenland "Red, White, and Blueland," aligning with former President Donald Trump's interest in acquiring the territory. Carter's bill, officially titled the "Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025," states that any official U.S. document referencing Greenland should use the new name. The congressman's press release emphasized the potential expansion of the U.S. and praised Trump's focus on acquiring Greenland as a national security priority.

While Carter's office confirmed he hasn't discussed the bill directly with Trump, the former president has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland since 2019, citing both economic and national security reasons. In late 2024, Trump reiterated his stance on Truth Social, emphasizing the importance of Greenland's ownership for U.S. national security and global freedom.

Despite Trump's interest and Carter's legislative move, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has reaffirmed that Greenland is not for sale. However, she expressed openness to greater U.S. presence in the Arctic, acknowledging the region's growing importance for defense and security, particularly in light of increasing Chinese and Russian activity. Frederiksen suggested potential collaborations to strengthen the U.S. footprint in Greenland, building upon their existing presence and aligning with NATO's objectives in the region.
