A Florida resident, Mason Joel Courson, 27, received a sentence of four years and nine months in federal prison for his involvement in the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol breach. The sentencing, which took place in a District of Columbia federal court, also includes three years of supervised release and $2,000 in restitution. Courson had previously pleaded guilty in November to assaulting, resisting, or impeding a law enforcement officer using a dangerous weapon.

Courson, from Tamarac, Florida, was apprehended in South Florida in December 2021. Court documents reveal that he joined a group contesting the presidential election results. Authorities report that a mob stormed the Capitol building in an attempt to disrupt the certification of the election results, leading to five fatalities.
The indictment details Courson's participation in the assault of a Metropolitan Police Department officer, who was attacked by a group wielding a baton, flagpole, and crutch. Prior to this, Courson was involved in attempts to push forward into the Capitol through the Lower West Terrace tunnel. Officials state that over 1,000 individuals across nearly all 50 states have been arrested for alleged offenses connected to the Capitol breach, with over 350 facing charges related to assaulting or obstructing law enforcement.
