Eleven Mexican fishermen were apprehended by the U.S. Coast Guard in federal waters off the coast of southern Texas. Authorities seized approximately 1,600 pounds of red snapper and nine sharks during the operation.
The incident occurred on February 6th, when Coast Guard Station South Padre Island, along with support from other Coast Guard units and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), intercepted four lanchas. These small, fast fishing vessels, typically 20-30 feet long, were operating just north of the maritime boundary line.
Upon inspection, the Coast Guard discovered the substantial haul of red snapper and sharks. In addition to the fish, fishing gear and highflyers, used to mark fishing lines, were also confiscated. The 11 fishermen were taken into custody and transferred to CBP officials.
Lt. Shane Gunderson, commanding officer of Station South Padre Island, emphasized the Coast Guard's commitment to combating illegal fishing and protecting U.S. sovereign waters. He stated that these operations will continue along the maritime border and in the Gulf of Mexico to deter illicit activities that threaten national security and territorial integrity.
