Biden's Senior Energy Advisor's Communications with Hunter Biden and Burisma Raise Questions

Created: JANUARY 18, 2025

President Biden's chief energy advisor, Amos Hochstein, engaged in multiple communications with Hunter Biden and seemingly interacted with individuals associated with the Ukrainian energy firm Burisma Holdings during Hunter's board membership, newly surfaced emails reveal. This raises concerns about the extent of President Biden's and his administration's awareness of Hunter's business activities.

Hochstein, appointed as Biden's special coordinator for global infrastructure and energy security in 2021, had previously testified about his interactions with Hunter and then-Vice President Biden. However, the emails indicate more frequent contact between 2015 and 2016.

In 2014, soon after joining Burisma's board, Hunter and his associates discussed engaging with Hochstein for assistance with a new Ukrainian tax on private energy companies. Emails from Burisma executive Vadym Pozharskyi and communications consultant Heather King show their concern about the tax and their intention to connect with Hochstein's recommended US Embassy contact.

Subsequent email exchanges between Burisma representatives indicate their efforts to influence the Ukrainian legislative process and their plan to share information with Hochstein's office. White House visitor logs reveal multiple meetings between Hochstein and then-Vice President Biden around the same period.

Further communications and meetings involving Hochstein, Hunter Biden, and other individuals connected to Burisma continued throughout 2014 and 2015. Notably, a meeting between Hochstein and Biden took place on the same day Hunter introduced his father to Pozharskyi and other business associates. A Senate report from 2020 suggests Hochstein raised concerns with both Bidens regarding Hunter's Burisma position and its potential implications for US policy in Ukraine.

Hochstein's frequent contact with both Bidens continued into 2016, including a meeting the day after Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin's dismissal. Shokin had been investigating Burisma's founder. The timing of these meetings and communications raises questions about the extent to which the Bidens were aware of and potentially involved in Hunter's overseas business dealings.
