The United Church of Christ (UCC) recently voted to condemn the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade and to financially support abortion access. This decision, made during their 34th General Synod, saw an overwhelming majority of delegates vote in favor of the measure titled "Denouncing the Dobbs Decision and Proclaiming Abortion as Healthcare."
The resolution asserts that most Americans support legal abortion and that restrictive state laws endanger pregnant individuals and create unequal access to reproductive care, especially for minorities. It criticizes Justice Clarence Thomas's concurring opinion in Dobbs, arguing it threatens constitutional protections for contraception, same-sex relationships, and marriage.

The UCC resolution advocates for peaceful resistance, including civil disobedience, against abortion bans. It also calls for financial assistance for those seeking abortions and encourages churches to offer support to individuals seeking reproductive healthcare.

While an earlier version of the resolution referenced the virgin birth of Jesus to defend abortion, this was removed from the final text. The UCC emphasizes its foundation on covenant and autonomy, likening its support for abortion access to its support for refugees and immigrants.

The UCC has experienced a substantial decline in membership over the past decade. Fox News Digital contacted the UCC for comment but did not receive a response.
