Former President Trump's substantial lawsuit against CBS News, alleging election interference related to a 2024 Kamala Harris interview, might be reaching a settlement. The lawsuit, filed in October, centers on accusations of deceptive editing that favored Harris, then-Vice President and Trump's Democratic rival. The suit claims CBS aired different portions of Harris' response to a question about Israel on separate occasions, presenting a shorter, more concise answer during primetime after a lengthier, less focused response aired earlier. Trump's legal team contends this manipulation aimed to portray Harris as more competent and decisive.
Recent reports suggest that Paramount Global, CBS's parent company, is actively engaged in settlement discussions with Trump's representatives. While no guarantee of a final agreement exists, Paramount's controlling shareholder, Shari Redstone, reportedly supports the settlement efforts. This move coincides with Paramount's planned merger with another company, and executives reportedly believe settling the lawsuit would improve the chances of the merger proceeding smoothly under the new Trump administration.
Trump's attorney emphasized the need for accountability, stating that CBS misrepresented the interview and concealed the transcript to bolster Harris' campaign. He reiterated Trump's commitment to holding media outlets responsible for disseminating misinformation and manipulating content for partisan gains. CBS News has previously defended its actions, denying any manipulation and asserting the interview was presented fairly. This potential settlement follows another recent case where ABC News settled a defamation lawsuit with Trump, paying him $15 million and issuing a written apology.
