Following a 37-count indictment related to his handling of classified documents, former President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Special Counsel Jack Smith, labeling him a "deranged lunatic" on his Truth Social platform. Trump's accusations link Smith to the 2013 IRS controversy, where the agency was found to be targeting predominantly right-leaning political groups for audits. Trump stated that Smith's actions in that matter led to an apology and significant financial reparations from the United States.

Trump also invoked the overturned corruption case of former Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell, in which Smith secured an initial conviction. He further criticized Smith's wife for her alleged disapproval of him. Trump maintains his innocence, portraying the investigation as a politically motivated attack. Along with Trump, his aide Walt Nauta faces six charges related to obstruction and concealment.

Special Counsel Smith addressed the public, emphasizing the seriousness of the alleged offenses and asserting that the law applies equally to all individuals. He stated that Trump is charged with violating national security laws and conspiring to obstruct justice.

Trump continues to deny any wrongdoing, characterizing the investigations as politically motivated. He and his legal team parted ways after the indictment was announced.
