Texas State Representative Gene Wu, a Democrat, has publicly criticized school choice proposals, arguing that they divert public funds to wealthy families for private education, separating their children from those in public schools. This stance is ironic considering Wu's past social media posts revealing that he himself attended private school and also chose private education for his own children.
Wu's recent comments, captured in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), were made during a protest against a school choice bill in Texas. He questioned the fairness of using public funds to support private education, suggesting it exacerbates socioeconomic disparities in education. However, in 2022, Wu admitted on social media to attending private high school and enrolling his own children in private institutions. At that time, he expressed discomfort with receiving state funds for private schooling, acknowledging it seemed unfair. He also characterized universal school choice programs as a "scam" benefiting wealthy donors.
The proposed Texas Education Freedom Act (Senate Bill 2), filed by State Senator Brandon Creighton, aims to provide universal school choice through education savings accounts. The bill would allocate at least $2,000 annually to each student's account. Families opting for private schools would receive $10,000 per student per year, with an additional $1,500 for students with disabilities. Similar legislation failed to pass in Texas three times in 2023.

Senator Creighton emphasized the importance of school choice in a press release, stating that the bill aims to provide every Texas family with the educational opportunities they deserve. He highlighted that 32 other states have already implemented similar programs to empower parents and students with increased educational freedom. Fox News Digital contacted Wu's office for comment but has not yet received a response.
