Legendary soul singer Sam Moore, one-half of the iconic duo Sam & Dave, passed away Friday morning at the age of 89. Sam & Dave's energetic, gospel-infused performances influenced generations of musicians, including Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. The duo's impact was further amplified in the 1980s when the Blues Brothers, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, covered "Soul Man" on Saturday Night Live, introducing their music to a new audience.

Moore battled a drug addiction in the 1970s.

Born in Miami, Florida, in 1935, Moore's musical journey began in church. He and Dave Prater, his future musical partner, performed in various soul and R&B clubs during the 1950s before officially joining forces in 1961. Their partnership, while musically fruitful, was often tumultuous, with legal disputes arising later in their careers. Moore even sued Prater for touring with a new partner under the name "The New Sam & Dave."

Sam & Dave began their run in the 1960s.

Moore faced personal struggles with drug addiction in the 1970s, a period that significantly impacted his career. With the support of his wife, Joyce, he sought treatment and found sobriety. Following this challenging time, Moore took on various musical jobs, including performances on cruise ships and in oldies shows, to rebuild his career and life.

Moore is survived by his wife, Joyce, his daughter, Michell, and two grandchildren. His passing marks the end of an era in soul music, but his powerful voice and the enduring legacy of Sam & Dave will continue to inspire and resonate with music lovers for generations to come.
