Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) has publicly declared his intention to vote in favor of confirming Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) as Secretary of State. President-elect Donald Trump nominated Rubio for the role in November, anticipating a smooth bipartisan confirmation. Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) also expressed support for Rubio, describing him as a "strong choice."
Rubio's current Senate term extends until early 2029. If confirmed, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will appoint a replacement until a special election in 2026. The Senate Committee on Foreign Relations has scheduled Rubio's nomination hearing for Wednesday. Rubio has served in the U.S. Senate since 2011.
