Stockton Steps Up: Georgia Wins SEC Championship After Beck's Injury

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Tension filled the air as Georgia quarterback Carson Beck suffered an injury during the first half of the SEC Championship game against Texas, leaving the Bulldogs trailing. Beck was hurt on the last play of the half while attempting a deep pass. Coach Kirby Smart reported a hand injury, but Beck was also seen with ice on his elbow.

With Georgia already down 6-3, backup quarterback Gunner Stockton, who hadn't seen much significant playing time, was thrust into the spotlight.

A touching moment unfolded as the cameras focused on Beck's and Stockton's mothers, seated together in the stands. They embraced, with Stockton's mother kissing Beck's mother's head. "We got this," Beck's mother reassured, wearing her son's jersey. And they did. Stockton led the Bulldogs to a thrilling 22-19 overtime victory, securing the SEC title and a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff.

Texas managed only a field goal in their first overtime possession. Beck, having returned to the game after Stockton's helmet came off on the previous play, handed the ball to Trevor Etienne, who sealed the win with a touchdown run.

This game marked a pivotal moment in Stockton's career. His previous appearances had primarily been in less critical situations. In this high-stakes match, he completed 12 of 16 passes for 71 yards, exceeding his prior career high in attempts.

Just a week after an eight-overtime battle against Georgia Tech, this shorter but significantly more rewarding victory was especially sweet for the Bulldogs.

This marked Texas' second loss of the season, both against Georgia. Their first encounter was on Oct. 19 in Austin. The Longhorns' playoff seeding and potential home game remain uncertain, requiring a significant drop in rankings.

A third matchup between these two teams in the national championship remains a possibility.
