Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) is spearheading renewed efforts to protect women's and girls' sports by reintroducing the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act in the Republican-controlled Senate. The bill seeks to solidify the interpretation of Title IX, emphasizing that gender is determined by "reproductive biology and genetics at birth," not gender identity.

The legislation aims to prevent federal funding for athletic programs that permit biological males to compete in women's and girls' sports, impacting transgender-identifying individuals. Tuberville argues that this is crucial to preserving fair competition and upholding Title IX's original intent.

With broad Republican support, including 23 co-sponsors, the bill is expected to reach a floor vote soon. Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) echoed Tuberville's concerns, emphasizing the importance of protecting female athletes' opportunities and safety. Tuberville is reportedly collaborating with President-elect Trump on this issue.

This move forces Democrats to address the transgender athlete debate, a prominent issue during the 2024 election. The Biden administration recently withdrew a proposed Title IX rule change that would have expanded the definition of sex discrimination to include sexual orientation and gender identity, facing significant opposition and legal challenges.
