Ryan Clark Criticizes Patriots' Rooney Rule Compliance in Vrabel Hiring

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Former NFL player and current ESPN analyst Ryan Clark has strongly condemned the New England Patriots' approach to the Rooney Rule during their recent head coaching search, which culminated in the hiring of Mike Vrabel. Clark argues that the Patriots' interviews with Pep Hamilton and Byron Leftwich, both currently out of the NFL, were merely perfunctory and undermined the spirit of the rule.

The Rooney Rule, established in 2003, mandates that teams interview at least two diverse candidates for head coaching vacancies. Clark contends that the Patriots' actions turned the rule into a "mockery" by interviewing candidates they had no intention of seriously considering, simply to fulfill the requirement. He believes this practice disrespects coaches who have dedicated their careers to earning such opportunities.

Instead of these superficial interviews, Clark suggests allowing teams who have a preferred candidate to hire someone at a lower level who would report directly to the head coach or offensive coordinator. This, he argues, would provide valuable mentorship and career development opportunities. Clark concludes that the Rooney Rule, while initially effective, has become a "joke" that needs to be reformed to truly benefit the coaches it was designed to help.

Mike Vrabel and Robert Kraft

Vrabel, a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Patriots as a player, previously coached the Tennessee Titans for seven seasons, leading them to a 54-45 record and three playoff appearances, including an AFC Championship game. His hiring by New England marks a return to the franchise where he enjoyed significant success as a player.
