DOGE Co-Leaders Musk and Ramaswamy Spearhead Opposition to Spending Bill

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Tesla CEO Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, co-leaders of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), have publicly denounced a proposed stopgap spending bill, echoing concerns from conservative members of Congress. The bill has sparked debate amidst a rapidly rising national debt, which currently exceeds $36 trillion, and a substantial budget deficit.

Musk criticized politicians supporting the bill, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that they "deserve to be voted out." He amplified a video of Ramaswamy condemning the bill and encouraged Americans to contact their representatives. Ramaswamy proposed a simplified one-page continuing resolution as an alternative, criticizing the existing bill as a "pork-fest." He argued against adding further wasteful spending, even while acknowledging that a clean resolution wouldn't address existing overspending.

Musk engaged with Republican representatives opposing the bill, including Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, who cited concerns about funding for Ukraine, mask and vaccine mandates, and "Deep State immunity." He also reposted comments from other Republicans critical of the legislation.

The 1,547-page bill, which extends government funding through March 14, 2025, has faced resistance due to its inclusion of policy riders unrelated to government funding. This has led to discussions of withdrawing the bill and pursuing a "clean" version, potentially excluding disaster aid. Such a move would be a significant win for DOGE, which advocates for changes in government spending practices.

Rep. Chip Roy's office urged a "no" vote on the bill, even if it meant delaying holiday proceedings. House Speaker Mike Johnson's leadership has been challenged due to the difficulty in securing a majority vote, with potential replacements being considered. President-elect Trump reportedly opposes the current bill, while acknowledging Johnson's challenging position. Johnson maintains that short-term funding measures are necessary while Democrats control the White House and Senate. He emphasized the Republicans' focus on reducing government spending when they gain greater control in the new Congress.

Chip Roy (R-TX) attends a press conference on the debt limit and the Freedom Caucus's plan for spending reduction at the U.S. Capitol on March 28, 2023 in Washington, DC. The group of conservative Republicans is proposing making deep cuts to entitlement spending including repealing much of President Joe Biden's signature Inflation Reduction Act.

Johnson confirmed communication with Musk and Ramaswamy, highlighting the need for Democrat votes given the Republicans' slim majority. A potential government shutdown looms if the bill fails to pass. Sen. Mitt Romney questioned Trump's stance on the matter, while Trump urged Republicans to "call the Democrats' bluff" if they threaten a shutdown. Musk stated a government shutdown is preferable to passing a flawed bill.
