Rams Edge Out 49ers in Low-Scoring NFC West Showdown

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

In a defensive battle that saw no touchdowns, the Los Angeles Rams secured a vital 12-6 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in a Thursday night NFC West clash. The Rams improved to 8-6, while the 49ers dropped to 6-8.

Despite both quarterbacks, Matthew Stafford for the Rams and Brock Purdy for the 49ers, coming off stellar Week 14 performances, the anticipated offensive fireworks never materialized. Rainy conditions and staunch defensive efforts contributed to a first half that saw only six points scored, with each team managing just a field goal.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with back-to-back field goals tying the game at 6-6. A pivotal 51-yard reception by Puka Nacua, who had a breakout game the previous week, set up the Rams for another field goal, giving them their first lead of the night.

The 49ers' attempt to respond was thwarted when Darious Williams intercepted a deep pass intended for Jauan Jennings. The Rams then methodically controlled the clock, culminating in a fourth field goal with seconds remaining, sealing the victory and boosting their playoff prospects while dimming those of the 49ers.

Stafford finished with 160 passing yards, with Nacua accounting for 97 of them. Surprisingly, Cooper Kupp had zero receptions. Kyren Williams led the Rams' rushing attack with 108 yards. Purdy threw for 142 yards with one interception. George Kittle was the 49ers' leading receiver with 61 yards.

Deebo Samuel, who had publicly expressed his desire for more touches, had a quiet game with just 19 total yards from scrimmage, including a crucial dropped pass that could have resulted in a touchdown.
