A heated Democratic primary is brewing in New York's 17th Congressional District, a key Republican-held seat north of New York City. Liz Whitmer Gereghty, sister of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, is challenging former U.S. Representative Mondaire Jones, who is attempting a political comeback after losing his seat due to redistricting last year.
The current representative, Republican Mike Lawler, secured a victory in the 2022 midterms against former Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, then-chairman of the House Democrats’ campaign arm. This win was part of a larger Republican success in New York during that election cycle, making the upcoming race crucial for Democrats hoping to regain control of the House in 2024.

Jones previously represented the 17th District but was forced to run in the 10th Congressional District after redistricting placed him in the same district as Maloney. He lost that primary to Daniel Goldman, who ultimately won the general election. Now, Jones is back, aiming to reclaim his former seat. However, his move to New York City after redistricting and subsequent return to the 17th District could pose a challenge as he explains his decision to voters.

Republicans see the Democratic primary battle as advantageous to their party, believing it will weaken the eventual nominee. Meanwhile, both Jones and Whitmer Gereghty are actively campaigning, securing endorsements and highlighting their platforms. Jones emphasizes his working-class upbringing and support for the Inflation Reduction Act, while Whitmer Gereghty presents herself as a local advocate focused on education and small businesses, with backing from groups like EMILY's List.

The primary race is expected to be contentious, with both candidates vying for the Democratic nomination and the chance to challenge Lawler in the 2024 general election. The outcome of this primary could significantly impact the Democrats' efforts to regain control of the House.
