Mississippi Deputies Cleared in Fatal Shooting of Armed Man

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Following an investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the state attorney general's office has determined that two Lafayette County sheriff's deputies were justified in using deadly force against a man who brandished a weapon at them. The incident occurred last fall during a domestic disturbance call.

On October 19, deputies responded to a report of a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, they found a woman outside the residence, while her two teenage children were sheltering in their rooms. The deputies attempted to negotiate with the man inside, urging him to release the teenagers and surrender peacefully. However, the situation escalated when the man pointed a firearm at the officers, leading to the fatal shooting. The woman and her children were unharmed.

The attorney general's office, which routinely reviews officer-involved shootings, concluded that the deputies' actions were justified. The names of the deputies involved have not been publicly released.
