Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Darrell Armstrong was taken into custody early Saturday morning and faces charges of aggravated assault against his girlfriend, according to police reports. Officers responded to a call around 3:45 a.m. in downtown Dallas, where an investigation revealed an altercation between Armstrong and his girlfriend. Reports indicate Armstrong struck her with a firearm and allegedly threatened to shoot her. The dispute reportedly began over a text message from another woman.

The victim stated Armstrong had been drinking and demanded her apartment keys. She alleges he was speaking to someone on the phone when he picked up a gun and hit her in the face, leaving a visible mark. She further claims Armstrong threatened to shoot her while loading the weapon.

The Mavericks organization released a statement acknowledging the incident and confirming Armstrong's placement on administrative leave pending the legal proceedings. Armstrong's attorney, Larry Taylor, stated they are conducting their own investigation and emphasized Armstrong's positive standing within the Dallas community. Armstrong has been an assistant coach with the Mavericks since 2009, contributing to their 2011 NBA championship. A member of the Orlando Magic Hall of Fame, he spent a significant portion of his 14-year NBA career with the team. Armstrong's NBA journey began in 1994 after playing overseas, and he earned both the Most Improved Player and Sixth Man of the Year awards in 1999.

His NBA career also included stints with the Mavericks, Hornets, Pacers, and Nets before retiring in 2008.
