Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed outrage after a migrant residing in a state-funded shelter was apprehended with a substantial quantity of drugs and a firearm. The individual, identified as Leonardo Andujar Sanchez, a Dominican Republic native, was found at a Quality Inn in Revere, Massachusetts, which has been repurposed as temporary housing for migrants. Authorities allege Sanchez possessed ammunition, high-capacity magazines, fentanyl, and cocaine with an estimated street value exceeding $750,000.

Sanchez is currently being held without bail after a judge deemed him a danger to the community. Reports indicate he entered the United States illegally in the previous year and obtained identification through the New York shelter system. Following the incident, Governor Healey initiated inspections of all state-run shelters and ordered a comprehensive review of intake procedures to bolster security and prevent similar occurrences. She emphasized the need for federal action on border security to prevent individuals with criminal intentions from entering communities.

Governor Healey has previously advocated for Massachusetts as a welcoming state for those in need. However, the recent incident has highlighted the strain on state resources due to the influx of migrants. Last year, she declared a state of emergency due to the migrant surge and called for federal assistance. She also pledged to oppose the Trump administration's immigration enforcement policies, emphasizing her commitment to protecting state residents. The governor's office has not yet responded to requests for further comment.

Tom Homan, appointed by then President-elect Trump as his “border czar,” previously cautioned state and local officials against hindering federal immigration enforcement efforts. He stressed the incoming administration's focus on addressing public safety and national security threats.
