A trial date has been set for May 20, 2024, coinciding with the lead-up to the presidential election. The case involves Carlos De Oliveira, the head of maintenance at Mar-a-Lago, who faces charges in Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation into former President Trump's handling of classified materials. This marks the third indictment stemming from this investigation.
Former President Trump was previously indicted in June on multiple charges, including willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and making false statements. He has pleaded not guilty to all 37 counts. Trump's aide, Walt Nauta, has also been charged in the probe and entered a not guilty plea.
A Trump spokesperson reacted to De Oliveira's indictment, characterizing it as a politically motivated attack by the Biden administration and the Department of Justice to target Trump and his associates. The spokesperson further dismissed the investigation as a baseless “witch hunt” intended to prevent Trump from running against President Biden.
