Macron Calls Urgent Meeting with European Leaders to Discuss Trump's Actions

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

European leaders are convening for an urgent meeting orchestrated by French President Emmanuel Macron to address the implications of President Donald Trump's recent actions. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski brought attention to this meeting during the Munich Security Conference, indicating its seriousness. Two EU officials confirmed to Politico that the meeting is scheduled for Monday.

Sikorski emphasized the need for a thoughtful response to Trump's approach, which he likened to the Russian military doctrine of "razvedka boyem" – reconnaissance by fire, a strategy of probing and adapting based on the observed reactions. He believes a coordinated European response is necessary.

This isn't Sikorski's first commentary on American politics. He has previously drawn comparisons between President Biden's debate performance and the decline of the Roman Empire, and has also acknowledged Trump's valid point about NATO members needing to increase their defense spending.

Despite past interactions characterized by sometimes tense handshakes, Macron has publicly expressed a desire to collaborate with Trump. Following Trump's election, Macron posted on X (formerly Twitter) conveying his readiness to work together for peace and prosperity, based on their respective convictions.
