Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Over 40 Democratic members of the House of Representatives publicly denounced Representative Pramila Jayapal's characterization of Israel as a "racist state." While Jayapal later attempted to clarify her remarks, her initial statement sparked widespread criticism from both Democrats and Republicans. A letter spearheaded by Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, and signed by 42 other Democrats, emphasized the enduring bond between the US and Israel, highlighting Israel's significance as a strategic partner and a beacon of democracy in the Middle East. The letter explicitly rejected attempts to delegitimize Israel, emphasizing the nation's right to exist and the importance of a two-state solution for lasting peace. The signatories expressed deep concern over Jayapal's comments while acknowledging her subsequent retraction.

This letter directly named Jayapal, distinguishing it from a previous statement by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other leaders expressing general support for Israel. The Democrats further lauded Israel as a vibrant, progressive, and inclusive democracy, noting the participation of Arab parties in the Knesset, the presence of women in high-ranking military positions, and the country's role as a haven for the LGBTQ+ community. They pledged to stand firm against anti-Zionist rhetoric and its potential to fuel antisemitism, emphasizing the importance of preserving the bipartisan support for the US-Israel relationship.

Jayapal, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, made the controversial statement at the Netroots Nation Conference in Chicago, where she also advocated for Palestinian self-determination and autonomy. In her subsequent clarification on Twitter, Jayapal stated that she doesn't consider Israel's existence as a nation to be racist, but criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for what she described as racist policies. The list of signatories on Gottheimer's letter included prominent Democrats from various states, representing a broad spectrum within the party.
