In a tragic incident, a 23-year-old Florida man allegedly shot his parents, fatally wounding his father and critically injuring his mother, following an argument about his video game habits and lack of employment.
Joseph Voigt is accused of opening fire on his parents, 63-year-old Marvin Voigt and 58-year-old Susan Voigt, late Saturday night. Susan Voigt managed to contact authorities around 11:20 p.m. to report the shooting. Responding officers discovered Marvin Voigt deceased in the driveway and Susan Voigt inside the home with a gunshot wound to the head. She was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. Bartow Police Chief Stephen Walker described the scene to reporters, noting Susan Voigt's precarious state upon their arrival.

Chief Walker expressed sadness over the incident, highlighting the reportedly good nature of the parents. A multi-agency search ensued for Joseph Voigt, who was apprehended by Orlando Police around 2 a.m. Sunday during a traffic stop on International Drive. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office, assisting in the investigation, reported that Voigt confessed to the shootings.

According to authorities, Voigt admitted that the argument stemmed from his father's frustration with his excessive video game playing and his urging for him to find employment. Chief Walker lamented the senseless nature of the violence. Joseph Voigt appeared in court in Orange County on Monday and is being transferred to Polk County, where he faces charges of murder and attempted murder.

Voigt has a prior criminal record, including arrests for discharging a firearm in a residential area and battery. He had been released from jail on December 1st following a battery arrest. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd commended the swift apprehension of the suspect and pledged a comprehensive investigation to ensure Voigt is held accountable. Chief Walker echoed the sentiment, expressing deep sorrow over the tragic event.
