Disney+ Revises Content Warnings, Signaling Shift in DEI Approach

Created: JANUARY 05, 2025

Disney+ is reportedly modifying the content warnings displayed before older films like "Peter Pan" and "Dumbo," suggesting a shift in the company's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategy, according to a recent Variety report.

Currently, Disney+ includes warnings before certain films to alert viewers of potentially racially insensitive content. The existing warning states that the film "includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of peoples or cultures." The revised warning now reads: "This program is presented as originally created and may contain stereotypes or negative depictions."

This change was initially reported by Axios. It represents a departure from Disney's 2020 update to its content warnings, which included a more extensive message acknowledging the harmful impact of stereotypes and emphasizing the company's commitment to creating more inclusive stories. Disney later reverted to a shorter version.

Stephen Kent, media director for the Consumer Choice Center, commented on this change, suggesting it reflects a broader shift in Disney's approach to DEI, potentially influenced by CEO Bob Iger's more pragmatic approach compared to his predecessor, Bob Chapek. Kent noted that this shift extends beyond content warnings and can be observed in other areas, such as the recent addition of Luke Skywalker to the Star Wars theme park, catering to fan preferences for established characters.
