Danny Masterson's legal representatives filed an appeal on Wednesday, contesting his 2023 rape conviction, citing procedural errors and the omission of exculpatory evidence. The appeal argues that these issues significantly impacted the fairness and reliability of the trial. Masterson's attorney, Cliff Gardner, stated that numerous judicial rulings skewed the jury's perspective and a substantial amount of exculpatory evidence was withheld. This appeal is just one part of Masterson's legal challenge, with a forthcoming habeas corpus petition planned to further detail flaws in the trial process. Masterson maintains his innocence and is seeking complete exoneration.

Following his conviction, Masterson was transferred from a maximum-security prison to a medium-security facility in San Luis Obispo, California. He was initially found guilty on two counts of forcible rape in May 2023, with the jury unable to reach a verdict on a third count. He received consecutive sentences of 15 years to life for each count, totaling 30 years to life. The charges stemmed from alleged assaults between 2001 and 2003. Masterson was arrested in 2020 and had been free on bail, maintaining his innocence throughout the legal proceedings.
