Damian Lillard's Trade Request: Portland Trail Blazers GM Emphasizes Patience

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

While seven-time All-Star Damian Lillard has formally requested a trade from the Portland Trail Blazers, a swift resolution seems unlikely. Blazers General Manager Joe Cronin addressed the media in Las Vegas on Monday, underscoring the team's commitment to a deliberate approach in finding the optimal trade scenario.

Cronin stressed the importance of patience, stating, "We've learned that patience is crucial. We won't react impulsively or rush into a deal just to address the situation superficially. The teams that have navigated trades successfully are those that have exercised due diligence, taken their time, and maintained composure." He added, "We're going to be patient and prioritize what benefits our team. We'll see how this unfolds, and if it takes months, so be it."

Lillard's trade request followed the 2023 NBA Draft, where Portland selected Scoot Henderson third overall. Speculation suggests Lillard is seeking a team built to contend immediately. The Miami Heat have emerged as a potential landing spot, reportedly Lillard's preferred destination.

Cronin acknowledged Lillard's significance to the franchise, saying, "Dame is undeniably a vital player and individual for us. We care deeply about his future. Simultaneously, we must prioritize our team's best interests and secure the right deal to build a strong foundation moving forward." He expressed the desire for a mutually beneficial outcome, where Lillard finds a suitable team and Portland receives a valuable return. However, he acknowledged the complexity of such arrangements, referencing past trades where both parties achieved their objectives.

Interestingly, Cronin didn't rule out the possibility of Lillard remaining in Portland next season. He reiterated the organization's long-standing goal of having Lillard retire as a Trail Blazer, stating, "That has always been, and continues to be, our objective. We're receptive to him being a part of our team whenever he chooses."
