Legendary college football coach Dick Sheridan, renowned for his leadership at both North Carolina State and Furman University, passed away on Thursday at the age of 81. His son, Jon, confirmed his passing to Furman's athletic department, stating that Sheridan died at Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach. The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

A native of Augusta, Georgia, Sheridan's coaching career began at Furman in 1978. He guided the Paladins to the Division I-AA (now known as the Football Championship Subdivision) title game in 1985. His success led him to North Carolina State in 1986, where he spent seven seasons, achieving six winning records and leading the Wolfpack to six bowl game appearances. His overall record at N.C. State was 59-29-3.

In June 1993, at the age of 51, Sheridan stepped down from his position at N.C. State, citing health concerns. He also mentioned the recent passing of his friend, Wolfpack basketball coach Jim Valvano, as a factor in his decision. Years later, in 2020, Sheridan received the ultimate honor in college football, being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Current Furman coach Clay Hendrix, who played under Sheridan during his time with the Paladins, expressed his condolences, saying, "He was such a special man, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Sheridan family."
