Brewers' Rowdy Tellez Sidelined After Freak Finger Injury

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rowdy Tellez will be out of commission for another four weeks following a bizarre pregame mishap. While shagging fly balls on Saturday, Tellez snagged his left ring finger in the center field wall padding, tearing off his fingernail and fracturing the fingertip. The injury required surgery and 17 stitches, significantly delaying his return to the lineup, which had been anticipated for Tuesday's game in Philadelphia.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell described the incident as a "freak accident," emphasizing that Tellez wasn't sprinting or moving at high speed when the injury occurred. Tellez is not expected to participate in baseball activities for two to three weeks. This latest setback comes as he was already on the injured list since July 5 due to right forearm inflammation.

This season, Tellez is hitting .213 with 12 home runs and 36 RBIs. Owen Miller is anticipated to fill in at first base during Tellez's absence.

Adding to the Brewers' injury woes, third baseman Brian Anderson was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Friday with a lower back strain. Infielder Jahmai Jones has been called up from Triple-A Nashville to take Anderson's place. Anderson's performance this season stands at a .229 batting average with nine home runs and 38 RBIs.

This incident involving the wall padding follows a previous injury to Brewers infielder/designated hitter Darin Ruf, who injured his knee in a collision with the tarp roller while chasing a foul ball in Cincinnati on June 2. Counsell jokingly expressed the training staff's displeasure with the apparent hazards at Great American Ball Park.
