Tragedy struck the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service as Firefighter Jordan Melton, 28, succumbed to his injuries on Monday, five days after a targeted shooting at Station 9. Melton, a recent graduate of the department's recruit school, was critically wounded alongside fellow firefighter Jamal Jones during routine equipment checks. While Jones remains hospitalized and is recovering, Melton's passing has left a void in the department and the city.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin expressed his profound sorrow, remembering Melton not just as a dedicated public servant but also as a vibrant individual with a passion for sports, good barbecue, and a sharp business mind.
