Iconic college basketball commentator Dick Vitale announced he will have two surgeries this summer to address recurring vocal cord issues. The 84-year-old Vitale shared the news on social media, indicating the first procedure is set for July 11, followed by six to eight weeks of voice rest. Despite the setback, Vitale remains optimistic about returning to the broadcast booth for his 45th season with ESPN.

Vitale expressed frustration at being unable to communicate freely, but emphasized his throat specialist's confidence in his recovery. He acknowledged the news was difficult, but put it in perspective, stating his challenges are minor compared to what others face daily. He solicited prayers from fans as he prepares for the procedures.

This isn't Vitale's first encounter with vocal cord problems. In February 2022, he underwent surgery for dysplasia and ulcerated lesions, requiring four weeks of vocal rest. He also battled lymphoma in 2021 and melanoma earlier that year, ultimately overcoming both cancers. Vitale announced he was cancer-free in August 2022.

Vitale's career began with coaching roles at Rutgers and Detroit Mercy, followed by a stint as head coach of the Detroit Pistons. He has been a fixture at ESPN for over four decades and is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame.
