Washington State Summer Camp Sparks Controversy Over Child Gender Transition Secrecy Policy

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

A Jewish summer camp in Washington state, Camp Solomon Schechter, has ignited debate due to its policy allowing children to keep gender transitions confidential from their parents. This practice, known as social transitioning, involves treating students as a gender different from their biological sex without parental notification or consent. Washington state law permits teenagers to withhold health plan information from parents regarding "gender dysphoria" and "gender-affirming care," even for minors.

Camp Schechter's website explicitly states its commitment to respecting children's gender identity preferences, even if it means concealing this information from parents. The camp asserts that individuals have the right to discuss their gender identity with whomever they choose, and that any disclosure of a camper's gender identity to staff does not authorize the camp to share this information with parents or guardians. The camp's policy further emphasizes that it won't publicly disclose campers' gender identities in cabin assignments. It also acknowledges preferred gender and pronouns even if individuals haven't pursued medical interventions like hormone replacement therapy or surgery.

Camp Schechter's housing arrangements also reflect elements of gender ideology, including gender fluidity. The camp assigns cabins based on gender identity rather than sex assigned at birth and states it collaborates with gender-fluid and non-binary campers and their families to determine suitable bunk assignments.

This isn't the camp's first instance of political controversy. In 2017, it issued an apology for raising the Palestinian flag during its daily flag-raising ceremony while hosting a group of children from the Israeli organization Kids4Peace. The group included Christian and Muslim Palestinian children from Jerusalem. The incident drew criticism from some within the Jewish community who objected to the presence of the Palestinian flag at a Jewish summer camp.

Fox News Digital contacted the summer camp for comment, and this article will be updated with any response.
