Trump to Reverse Plastic Straw Bans with Executive Order

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Former President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social his intention to sign an executive order next week overturning bans and limitations on plastic straws implemented during the Biden administration. Trump stated his order will counter what he calls the "ridiculous Biden push for Paper Straws."

Several Democratic-led states, including California, Colorado, New York, Maine, Oregon, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Washington, currently have restrictions on single-use plastic straws. These regulations often limit their availability in restaurants unless specifically requested by the customer. Trump's proposed executive order would directly challenge these state laws.

This action comes after the Biden administration's July announcement of plans to phase out single-use plastics in federal government operations. Trump has long been critical of paper straws, previously referring to them as ineffective. His stance on plastic straws aligns with his broader deregulatory agenda.

Plastic straws have been a subject of debate, with some states opting for paper alternatives.

Elon Musk, heading the Department of Government Efficiency, expressed support for Trump's planned order on X (formerly Twitter).
