He highlighted the importance of being prepared for any potential vacancy in such a critical role.

Shafer suggested prominent figures like California Governor Gavin Newsom and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg as potential contenders. He reasoned that these individuals are likely to pursue the presidency in 2028 regardless, so an earlier challenge could benefit both them and the party. This, he argued, would "toughen up" Biden for the general election. He pointed to some of Biden's recent verbal missteps, including a remark about Putin "losing the war in Iraq," to underscore his point about the president needing a "tune-up."

Shafer also raised questions about Vice President Kamala Harris's readiness to assume the presidency, implying that public confidence in her ability to step into Biden's shoes remains lacking. This concern, he suggested, adds urgency to the need for a primary challenge. He even floated the idea of Beto O'Rourke as a viable contender, emphasizing that any "heavyweight" under 75 with the necessary political acumen would be a suitable challenger.

Currently, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson are the only declared Democratic challengers to Biden.
