Man Arrested at US Capitol with Machete Hours Before Trump Meeting

A tense situation unfolded at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center on Wednesday afternoon when a man was apprehended attempting to enter with a machete just hours before President-elect Trump's scheduled meeting with Senate Republicans. U.S. Capitol Police reported that the incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. when security personnel detected the weapon during a routine X-ray screening at the north entrance of the visitor center. The screening process was immediately halted, and the individual, identified as 44-year-old Mel J. Horne of Washington, D.C., was taken into custody. Upon further inspection of Horne’s bag, officers discovered not only the machete but also three additional knives. The north entrance security checkpoint remained closed for approximately an hour following the incident as investigators processed the scene. Confiscated Weapons Horne faces multiple charges related to carrying dangerous weapons and is currently being questioned by authorities to ascertain his motives. The Capitol Police have affirmed that there is no present threat to Congress, the Capitol building, or the public.
