Remember when Jim Carrey declared he'd only return to acting for a script "written in gold ink by angels"? Well, it seems those angels might have been carrying a hefty bill instead. Two years after announcing his retirement, Carrey is back, reprising his role as Dr. Robotnik in "Sonic the Hedgehog 3," and he's humorously attributing his return to financial needs.

In 2022, Carrey told Access Hollywood he was stepping away from acting, suggesting only an extraordinary project could lure him back. Now, at the London premiere of "Sonic 3," he playfully admitted his earlier statement might have been a bit of an exaggeration. When asked about the "gold ink" comment, he laughed and quipped, "I came back because I get to play a genius, which is a stretch, and frankly, I need the money."

Carrey's return comes after a period of reflection, during which he expressed contentment with his quiet life, painting, and spirituality. However, the allure of portraying the eccentric Dr. Robotnik seems to have been too strong to resist, coupled with the practicalities of maintaining his lifestyle.
Carrey's return also brings back memories of his outspoken criticism of Hollywood's reaction to Will Smith's infamous Oscars slap in 2022. He condemned the standing ovation Smith received, calling the industry "spineless" and expressing his belief that Smith should have been removed from the ceremony.

Carrey stated he would have sued Smith for $200 million had he been in Chris Rock's position, emphasizing that words do not justify physical assault. While wishing Smith well, Carrey lamented the incident's shadow over the achievements of others at the awards ceremony.

"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" is slated for release on December 20th.
