In a tragic incident, a corrections deputy in South Florida was fatally shot Monday night in what authorities are calling a targeted attack. Basil Powell, 39, was ambushed upon returning to his Belle Glade home, a city located near Lake Okeechobee, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. As he stepped out of his vehicle, he was immediately met with gunfire.

Officials have stated that the incident appears unrelated to Powell's duties as a corrections officer. He joined the force in October 2021 and was assigned to the West Corrections Center.
