After initially reporting the death of redshirt freshman linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr., Alabama A&M University has retracted the statement, confirming that the 20-year-old athlete is still alive. The university explained that the initial report came from a family member Tuesday evening, which later proved to be inaccurate. The school expressed regret for spreading the misinformation but celebrated the news that Burnett is in stable condition.

The university emphasized their immediate response was based on the family's wishes to inform the community. Upon receiving updated information from UAB Hospital, they learned Burnett was still alive. A statement on Burnett's GoFundMe page, organized by his sister Dominece James, asked for prayers and explained he is facing challenges but the family remains hopeful. The page previously detailed Burnett's struggle with brain bleeds and swelling from head injuries sustained in a late October game, requiring a craniotomy.
