AirTags and Car Security: Outsmarting Thieves or Outsmarting Yourself?

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Apple AirTags are marketed as handy tools for locating lost items, including cars. However, their effectiveness against car theft has limitations. Thieves equipped with iPhones can often detect hidden AirTags, making concealment crucial.

One proposed strategy involves placing an AirTag inside an RFID-blocking wallet. This raises the question: does an RFID wallet mask an AirTag from detection? Unfortunately, the answer is no.

RFID wallets are designed to protect credit cards and other sensitive data from being scanned by radio waves. However, AirTags utilize Bluetooth and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, which are unaffected by RFID blocking. Therefore, a thief with an iPhone or locator can still detect an AirTag hidden within an RFID wallet.

While RFID wallets don't offer a solution, Faraday bags do block AirTag signals. These bags utilize electromagnetic shielding to prevent signal transmission. The downside? Blocking the AirTag's signal also prevents you from tracking it. This renders the AirTag useless for recovery purposes.

For more robust car security, consider alternatives like GPS trackers, which offer real-time location data without the risk of detection by nearby iPhones. Physical deterrents such as steering wheel locks and alarm systems can also be effective. A multi-layered security approach provides the best protection against theft.

While AirTags can be helpful for locating lost items, they are not a foolproof solution for preventing car theft. Thieves with the right technology can circumvent AirTag tracking, and attempts to hide AirTags can backfire. Consider exploring alternative security measures for more comprehensive vehicle protection.
