Whistleblowers Allege Obstruction and Political Influence in Hunter Biden Probe

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Congressional testimony from two IRS whistleblowers has ignited controversy, alleging that officials within the Justice Department, FBI, and IRS interfered with the Hunter Biden tax evasion investigation. The whistleblowers claim that decisions throughout the investigation appeared politically motivated and consistently benefited the president's son.

Gary Shapley Jr., the IRS supervisor of the investigation (codenamed "Sportsman"), testified that these decisions impacted every stage of the probe. He revealed the investigation began in November 2018 as a spin-off from a separate IRS investigation into an online pornography platform based overseas. The connection between the platform and Hunter Biden remains unclear in the released testimony.

Shapley stated that the FBI obtained Hunter Biden's laptop in December 2019 and informed the IRS of potential tax crime evidence. However, Shapley claimed he was denied access to the laptop until October 2020. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lesley Wolf reportedly admitted that prosecutors intentionally withheld the laptop from investigators, a decision Shapley deemed unprecedented. He expressed concern that not all evidence on the laptop may have been reviewed.

Furthermore, Shapley accused Wolf of restricting questioning related to President Biden, referred to as "dad" or "the big guy." This limitation, according to Shapley, prevents determining if the laptop contained evidence of other criminal activities involving Hunter or President Biden.

Shapley highlighted specific instances where inquiries about President Biden were allegedly stifled, including an email discussing "ten held by H for the big guy." This email, related to a Chinese energy firm deal, raised questions about the identities of "H" and "the big guy" and the reason for a separate, hidden percentage. Shapley testified that Wolf explicitly instructed against asking about "the big guy" or "dad," despite objections from other investigators.

A WhatsApp message from Hunter Biden to a CEFC executive further fueled suspicions. In the message, Hunter Biden claimed to be with his father and demanded an explanation for an unfulfilled commitment. He threatened repercussions if contacted by anyone other than specific individuals, stating, "I am sitting here waiting for the call with my father." This message prompted investigators to seek a search warrant for the Biden's Delaware guest house where Hunter Biden resided, but Wolf allegedly blocked the warrant, citing "optics" as a primary concern.

Shapley emphasized that Wolf acknowledged sufficient probable cause for the search warrant but deemed it not worth the potential fallout. She allegedly admitted that significant evidence would likely be found at the guest house but expressed doubts about obtaining approval for a search.

The White House maintains President Biden's non-involvement in his son's business dealings. The Justice Department affirmed U.S. Attorney David Weiss's full authority over the investigation, including charging decisions.
