South Fulton Mayor Faces Scrutiny Over City Credit Card Spending

Created: JANUARY 16, 2025

South Fulton, Georgia Mayor Khalid Kamau, also known as Mayor Kobi, is under fire for allegedly misusing his city-issued credit card. During a heated city council meeting, Councilwoman Helen Willis confronted Kamau about over $26,000 in questionable expenses, including a documented 20-day trip to Ghana. Kamau expressed his disappointment that the situation was unfolding in what he called the "Blackest city in America" during Black History Month, accusing the council of infighting. Willis retorted, criticizing Kamau for portraying himself as a victim and highlighting the Africa trip as a key point of contention. She emphasized the council's desire for productive meetings focused on city business, rather than dealing with the fallout of the mayor's spending habits.

Kamau reportedly left the meeting before discussions about his spending began. This isn't his first brush with controversy; in 2023, he was arrested on burglary and trespassing charges for entering a lake house he mistakenly thought was abandoned. His online biography identifies him as the first Black Lives Matter organizer elected to public office in the US.

Among the questioned expenses are a $1,800 pool table for his office, over $9,000 in travel upgrades (against city policy), $13,000 on electronics and international travel, a $1,300 drone, and various Amazon purchases, including one for $1,800. Local news outlet WSB-TV previously reported on over $5,000 in plane tickets charged to the city card, including a $1,500 Air Kenya flight. Residents have expressed concern over the use of taxpayer money for such expenditures.

Councilwoman Willis claims Kamau has 112 outstanding receipts that haven't been reconciled, violating city policy. She has also criticized the mayor's international travel, arguing that local economic development should take precedence. While the city lacks specific regulations on international travel, personal expenses on city cards require approval. The council recently implemented a temporary ban on international travel pending a policy review. An independent firm, Baker Tilly, will investigate the credit card usage. Fox News Digital's attempts to contact Kamau for comment were unsuccessful.
