Created: JANUARY 19, 2025

A devastating mass shooting in Kwanobuhle township near Kariega, South Africa, claimed the lives of six people and left four others injured on Tuesday night. Three unidentified assailants entered a residential property and opened fire on individuals both inside and near the house. Among the victims were five men and one woman, while the injured included another woman. Police spokesperson Col. Priscilla Naidu confirmed that two women were shot near the gate, with one fatally wounded. Authorities are actively searching for the suspects, and the motive for the attack remains unclear.

This incident adds to a series of mass shootings that have plagued South Africa recently. Earlier this year, eight people were killed at a birthday party in the Eastern Cape province, ten members of a family (including a child) were murdered in their home, and eight more lost their lives in a shooting at a men's hostel. Last year, sixteen individuals were killed in a mass shooting at a bar in Soweto, Johannesburg. South Africa's homicide rate is one of the highest globally, with firearms accounting for a significant number of deaths. Official statistics reveal that at least 2,629 people were killed by firearms in the first three months of this year, averaging 30 deaths per day.
