Shakespeare Triggered: UK University Issues 200+ Content Warnings for Bard's Works

Created: JANUARY 14, 2025

A UK university has taken the unusual step of issuing over 200 trigger warnings for students studying the works of William Shakespeare. The University of the West of England Bristol implemented these warnings, citing student requests related to sensory processing issues and past trauma. The warnings encompass a broad range of topics, from violence and blood to psychological trauma and even extreme weather.

The university explained that the content warnings were intended to give students advance notice of potentially sensitive material, allowing them to engage with the works in a more informed manner. For instance, the comedy "Much Ado About Nothing" received warnings for "treatment of women" and "mourning," while "Macbeth" was flagged for murder, suicide, violence, and family trauma. Even "The Tempest" received a warning for the seemingly innocuous "popping of balloons" in a theatrical performance.

The iconic tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" carries warnings for death, suicide, violence, and blood. The Free Speech Union Director, Toby Young, criticized the university's decision, calling it something out of a "bad comedy" and indicative of a broader trend of "woke" ideology in UK institutions. He compared the current situation in the UK to a comical version of George Orwell's dystopian novel "1984."
