Evangelical Voters Hold Key to 2024 GOP Nomination

Created: JANUARY 18, 2025

The importance of the social conservative vote in the upcoming 2024 Republican presidential primary is undeniable, with former President Trump and his rivals set to address a significant gathering of evangelical leaders and activists. This influential voting bloc will have a considerable impact on who emerges as the party's nominee.

Timothy Head, executive director of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, stressed the vital role of evangelical voters, stating that securing the GOP nomination hinges on their support. He highlighted the necessity for candidates to effectively communicate with this demographic, particularly given the importance of Super Tuesday.

Nearly all the 2024 Republican contenders, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, Senator Tim Scott, former Governors Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson, Vivek Ramaswamy, Larry Elder, Perry Johnson, and Francis Suarez, will be present at the Faith and Freedom Coalition's annual Road to the Majority conference in Washington D.C. They will join approximately 70 speakers addressing an estimated 3,000 attendees.

Despite the narrative of declining influence, evangelical leaders maintain that social conservatives still represent a significant portion of the Republican primary electorate. The Faith and Freedom Coalition, founded by veteran political consultant Ralph Reed, advocates for social conservative principles and emphasizes the importance of winning over these voters, especially in early primary states like Iowa and South Carolina.

What does the growing 2024 GOP field mean for Trump?

This year's conference coincides with the one-year anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization Supreme Court decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade. Attendees are eager to hear candidates address their concerns regarding the protection of life, religious freedom, family values, and the U.S. relationship with Israel. Additionally, there's growing interest in how candidates plan to address issues related to corporate activism and parental rights in education.

While Trump remains the frontrunner and is praised for his Supreme Court appointments that led to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, some of his rivals have expressed stronger support for a federal abortion ban. While Trump enjoys a loyal base of support, many evangelical voters are still considering their options, seeking a candidate who can effectively challenge the current administration and address their concerns about cultural issues.
