The Pacific Palisades resident, Rachel Darvish, intercepted Newsom as he was preparing to depart in an SUV, demanding explanations for the lack of water pressure in fire hydrants and seeking reassurance about the future of her fire-ravaged community. Newsom, caught off guard, explained he was attempting to contact President Biden for assistance.

Darvish expressed skepticism about Newsom's attempts to reach the President, prompting Newsom to reveal he was having trouble with cell phone service. He apologized for the situation, particularly the impact on Darvish's daughter and her school. Darvish pressed Newsom to address the issue of inadequate water pressure in the hydrants, a critical factor in combating the flames. She insisted on witnessing Newsom's call to Biden, emphasizing the devastating losses suffered by local schoolchildren.

Newsom assured Darvish he was doing everything possible, but she remained unconvinced. She criticized the lack of preparedness and questioned why she hadn't seen any fire trucks or officials offering assistance as she evacuated her home. Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass have faced widespread criticism for the city's response to the wildfires. Newsom met with President Biden to discuss the crisis, and the President approved a major disaster declaration, pledging full federal funding for the disaster response for 180 days.
